After visiting Sarsoli Dham, while traveling from Kudal towards Goa, I came to know about an art gallery founded by Shri Ganpat Masge at Thakarwadi, situated along the route.

Thakarwadi
A Serendipitous Discovery of Art and Culture

Honestly, we had stopped here only because it was on our way. However, as we explored the gallery, we were captivated by its uniqueness—the dedication to preserving fading folk arts, traditional artifacts, and lost cultural heritage for the new generation. We completely lost track of time while immersing ourselves in it. Fortunately, since we arrived in the afternoon, there was no one else around, and the young guide who explained the exhibits to us did so with great passion and sincerity.

Preserving the Legacy of Thakar Folk Arts and Traditions

The name “Thakarwadi” is derived from the Thakar tribal community. This community is skilled in a total of eleven folk arts, all of which are showcased in this gallery. The exhibition includes artifacts and musical instruments used in performances like Pangul Bull, Gondhali, Bhute, Pote, and Vasudev. Additionally, traditional puppets and musical instruments used in shadow puppetry and string puppet shows are also displayed, with live demonstrations conducted for visitors.

The gallery also features ancient paintings created on teak leaves, along with the natural brushes and colours used in the process. Various types of fishing nets, traditional copper and brass utensils, earthenware, bamboo measuring vessels, winnowing baskets made from palm leaves, old tools, antique oil lamps, wild herbal medicines, woolen blankets, and even ancient coins are part of this extensive collection, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the past.

Honouring Sakharam Masge and the Artistry of Traditional Crafts

The museum also houses personal belongings, musical instruments, and the illustrated Ramayana created by Sakharam Masge, who is the inspirational figure of the Masge family. In addition, there is a dedicated section showcasing a variety of bamboo crafts such as winnowing trays, baskets, brooms, and hand fans. Another section is dedicated to traditional farming tools, preserving the essence of agricultural heritage.

This museum showcases artifacts that the younger generation may not even have heard of. While some of these items are familiar to my generation, they are entirely new to the next. That’s why the Thakarwadi Tribal Art Gallery serves as an educational and enlightening space for them.

At the entrance, photographs and information about several freedom fighters are displayed, setting a historical tone. As visitors exit the folk art section, they come across a small stage where puppet shows are performed. The approach to the museum, along with its surroundings, adds to the overall charm of the visit.

Located in Pinguli village near Kudal, the Thakarwadi Tribal Art Gallery is a must-visit destination, especially for children, offering them a glimpse into the rich heritage of traditional arts and crafts.
