Keri Village – A Unique Gem
There are three villages named Keri in Goa: one in Pernem Taluka, one in Ponda, and the other in Sattari Taluka, located before reaching Chorla Ghat on the way to Belgaum. All three are scenic and unique in their own ways. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Keri in Pernem Taluka.
Keri in Pedne – A Coastal Village Near Maharashtra Border
This village is located near the Maharashtra border, on the way to Vengurla from Goa. As we traveled to Keri, the natural beauty along the way and the quaint Goan villages gave a hint of approaching the Konkan region. Along the road, we saw many foreign tourists on motorcycles, and we wondered where they were headed. Our curiosity was answered when we reached Keri Beach.
The Renowned Dev Aajoba Temple
Besides its beautiful coastline, Keri is famous for the revered Dev Aajoba temple. Many people have deep faith in Dev Aajoba, believing that once they call upon him, he will surely protect them. This temple hosts a grand fair in February, located right on the beach.
Unique Architecture of Dev Aajoba Temple
The temple stands out with its unique open design, supported by pillars without any surrounding walls. It has a roof with a pinnacle, and above the roof, small dome-like structures house various statues of sages, adding to its charm. In the center of the temple is a sacred stone, which is believed to be Dev Aajoba. Surrounding this stone are eight pillars with intricate carvings of deities like Ganapati, Shiva, and Vishnu. This distinct structure enhances the beauty of Keri Beach, complemented by the lush green hills behind the temple.
Dev Aajoba – The Guardian of Keri Port
Dev Aajoba is believed to reside on the sacred stone in the temple’s center, acting as the guardian. Devotees firmly believe that once they call upon Dev Aajoba, he will always protect them. The term “Aajoba” is used affectionately, akin to calling a wise and caring elder in the family, who provides guidance and love. A devotee explained that this is why the deity is fondly referred to as “Aajoba.”
Highlights of Keri Beach
Adjacent to the beach are several shacks. The many foreign tourists we saw earlier were here to enjoy the sea and relax at these shacks. The beach was filled with foreign tourists, with hardly any Indian tourists in sight. Since these shacks are near Dev Aajoba’s temple, alcohol is not sold here, which might explain the absence of Indian tourists!! The beach was exceptionally clean, possibly due to the lack of domestic tourists. This thought crossed my mind as I recalled the often poor condition of beaches crowded with domestic tourists. It’s something that all tourists should consider.
A Must-Visit Village
Keri is a village worth visiting for those who love Goa’s natural beauty and beaches. However, visitors should ensure they respect the sanctity and cleanliness of the temple and its surroundings. Make sure to leave with the blessings of Dev Aajoba with you when leaving.
