The Beloved City of Panaji
Panaji, the capital city of Goa, holds a special place in the hearts of many. Its charm draws visitors from across the globe. For some, it’s the allure of Miramar Beach and Dona Paula, while others are captivated by the casinos and cruises that keep them coming back. The tranquil Mandovi River mesmerizes many, and some find themselves enchanted by the shade of the grand tree-lined arches along the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg. For me, however, the moment I step into Panaji, my steps instinctively lead me towards the Kala Academy, a place close to my heart.
Not Just Kala Academy, It’s a Temple of Art!
From the very first time I laid eyes on this magnificent building, I’ve been deeply in love with it. The reason? Not just the architectural beauty and serene surroundings of the structure but something much more profound.
This place has given me the privilege of witnessing the brilliance of many artists whom I revere as divine beings. That’s why, for me, this is not just the Kala Academy—it is truly a Temple of Art.
A Beloved Haven for Art Enthusiasts
After moving to Goa post-marriage, my initial residence was just 700-800 meters away from the Kala Academy in Panaji. Evening strolls would often lead me there naturally.
Whether there was an event or not, the Kala Academy always bustled with people. Its canteen served as a favourite meeting point for artists to gather, converse, and share ideas. Students, their parents, and admirers like me, enchanted by the building’s charm, would frequent the space. Not just adults, even children found joy in playing around its inviting premises.
A Glimpse into the Kala Academy
The vision of Goa’s first Chief Minister, Dayanand Bandodkar, was to establish an institution dedicated to the arts. This dream was realized in 1970 when the Goa Government founded the Kala Academy Society. The iconic Kala Academy building, designed by renowned architect Charles Correa, stands as a masterpiece of architectural art. The structure was completed in 1983.
Situated in the picturesque Campal area of Panaji, along the serene banks of the Mandovi River, the Academy serves as a hub where artists come together to celebrate and showcase various art forms like music, dance, drama, fine arts, folk arts, and literature.
Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall – The Heart of Kala Academy
The Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall is the very soul of Kala Academy. This elegant theatre, adorned with a well-designed stage and seating arrangement, captivates visitors with its unique charm. A standout feature of this hall is the artistic mural that adorns the walls on all three sides in a gallery-like design. These vivid depictions of India’s diverse communities are a masterpiece created by Goa’s renowned artist, Mario Miranda.
The Layout of Kala Academy
Kala Academy is a versatile cultural hub with spaces catering to various art forms and events. It features:
- A hall for hosting exhibitions by painters and photographers.
- The Black Box, ideal for intimate and smaller performances.
- An open-air theatre, perfect for large-scale audience gatherings.
- A canteen and a beautiful green lawn nearby.
The steps leading to the classrooms above the lawn also serve a dual purpose, often becoming seating for viewers during informal performances held on the grass.
Adding to its charm is the striking gate at the main entrance, perfectly complementing the architectural elegance of the Academy. The well-maintained lawns, trees, and overall landscaping further enhance the beauty of the space, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.
Kala Academy: A Favourite Venue for School Gatherings
During December and January, Academy buzzes with excitement as it becomes the preferred venue for various school annual gatherings. The sight of children, dressed in colourful costumes, cheerfully bustling around the premises, adds a vibrant charm to the already lively atmosphere.
Kala Academy: A Cultural Hub for Festivals and Celebrations
Kala Academy serves as the nurturing ground for an array of vibrant festivals and events. From renowned music festivals like Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar Mahotsav, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki Mahotsav, and Swarmangesh to the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the academy hosts year-round cultural activities, including bhajan competitions, drama festivals, tiatrs, and professional plays.
Adjacent to the main campus, the Lokotsav—a grand festival dedicated to folk arts—takes place every January. This event brings together handicrafts, folk music, and traditional cuisines from different regions of India, creating a vibrant cultural mosaic.
With countless programs of various scales, Kala Academy truly stands as the home of cultural festivities.
A Serene Retreat for Leisure
Whenever monotony strikes, a visit to Kala Academy becomes my go-to remedy. If there’s an event, that’s a bonus; otherwise, the serene Darya Sangam area at the back offers the perfect escape. Sitting quietly by the confluence of the Mandovi River and the sea, soaking in the tranquility, and returning home with a refreshed mind has been my cherished routine.
