A Memorable First Visit to Vijayadurga Temple, Keri
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Vijayadurga Temple in Keri, Goa, while attending a residential camp organized by Samskrita Bharati Goa. The camp was conducted in a building owned by the temple, situated just across the road behind the temple premises.
As our schedule was packed with sessions throughout the day, I barely had time to explore the surroundings. It was only during our lunch break that I could truly observe the breathtaking natural beauty enveloping the temple.
My First Experience of the Divine Beauty of Vijayadurga Temple
We walked to the temple to partake in the afternoon Mahaprasad. At the heart of a beautifully maintained courtyard filled with flowering plants stood the magnificent Vijayadurga Temple.
Inside, I was fortunate to have a brief yet deeply moving darshan of the radiant idol of Goddess Vijayadurga. Time, however, was limited, and we soon returned to the camp. Yet, while leaving, the serene surroundings seemed to silently invite us to return again.
Although I tried several times over the years, another visit somehow never happened.
Returning to Keri After Many Years
Finally, this year, without any planning or expectation, I unexpectedly found myself back at Vijayadurga Temple, Keri—almost as though nature itself had called me back.
This visit allowed me to spend unhurried moments admiring the temple, its surroundings, and the divine idol with complete attention. It was December, and the short winter evening had already begun to descend.
Vijayadurga Temple Keri – A Peaceful Temple Hidden in Nature
Nestled amidst lush greenery in Keri village of Ponda Taluka, Vijayadurga Temple offers a rare combination of spirituality and natural beauty.
The village lies on one side of the temple, while dense forests embrace the other. Except during annual festivals and temple fairs, the temple remains remarkably peaceful and uncrowded, making it one of the most serene temples in Goa.
Visitors looking for tranquility, meditation, photography, or simply an escape from busy tourist destinations will instantly fall in love with this sacred place.
Traditional Goan Temple Architecture
Like many historic temples in Goa, Vijayadurga Temple showcases traditional Goan temple architecture with its distinctive sloping tiled roof.
Since the deity was beautifully decorated during our visit, the original form of the idol was not entirely visible. However, the Goddess appeared to be in her Ashtabhuja (eight-armed) form.
A Temple Filled with Purity, Peace and Positive Energy
The temple premises are exceptionally neat and meticulously maintained. Every corner reflects cleanliness and devotion.
Far away from heavy traffic, commercial activity, and urban noise, the temple radiates a remarkably peaceful atmosphere. The surrounding forests amplify its spiritual energy, making it an ideal destination not only for devotees but also for nature lovers and anyone seeking inner peace.
Exploring the Traditional Layout of Vijayadurga Temple
The temple follows the classic architectural layout commonly found in ancient Goan temples. It consists of:
- Nagarkhana (traditional drum house)
- Spacious Sabhamandap (assembly hall)
- Antaral (vestibule)
- Chowk (central courtyard)
- Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum)
Each section contributes to both the beauty and functionality of the temple.
Airy Antaral with Scenic Views
Beyond the Sabhamandap lies the Antaral, a beautifully ventilated transitional hall.
Large windows on both sides feature traditional stone benches where devotees can peacefully sit after darshan while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty.
The Beautiful Madhyamandap (Central Hall)
Ahead of the Antaral is the Madhyamandap, also known as the Chowk.
Designed to remain naturally cool, this hall provides an ideal place for meditation and quiet reflection after worship.
Large arched windows and elegant circular pillars enhance its beauty. Similar spacious windows continue along the circumambulatory path and beside the side entrances.
A broad elevated platform above the entrance, decorated with the Goddess’s magnificent Makhar, gives this hall a distinctive architectural character.
The Distinctive Nagarkhana of Vijayadurga Temple
One of the most fascinating architectural features is the Nagarkhana, found only in a handful of traditional Goan temples.
This is where traditional instruments such as the Shehnai, Chowghada, and Nagada are played during morning rituals.
Upon entering the temple through the Sabhamandap, the Nagarkhana is the first structure visitors encounter. A similar architectural feature can also be seen at the famous Mahalasa Narayani Temple in Mardol, although there it is positioned above the main entrance.
The Nagarkhana greatly enhances the temple’s traditional charm.
Majestic Temple Spire with Golden Kalasha
The temple’s elegant spire is adorned with copper elements and crowned by a magnificent golden Kalasha.
Its graceful design enhances the temple’s divine appearance and stands as a beautiful example of traditional Goan temple craftsmanship.
Beautifully Maintained Temple Complex
After offering our prayers, we completed a Pradakshina around the temple.
Traditional tiled-roof buildings, halls, and temple structures surrounding the main shrine perfectly complement the peaceful atmosphere.
Everything appeared thoughtfully maintained and harmoniously blended with nature.
Nature and Architecture in Perfect Harmony
Beautiful flowering plants decorate every corner of the temple complex.
The sacred Tulsi Vrindavan in front of the temple and the beautifully designed Deepastambha (lamp tower) further enhance the spiritual ambience.
As evening slowly approached, we prepared to leave.
Since we had entered through the rear entrance, we planned to return the same way before darkness fell.
Little did we know that another unforgettable experience awaited us.
A Breathtaking Surprise Before Leaving
As twilight deepened, the temple became even more peaceful.
Just before heading back, an unexpected impulse made us walk towards the main entrance.
Looking towards the right, we were left speechless by the stunning natural scenery unfolding before us.
The Unique Temple Tank of Vijayadurga Temple
Ancient Goan temples are often accompanied by temple tanks, either in front of or behind the shrine.
Vijayadurga Temple follows this beautiful tradition.
However, this tank was unlike any we had previously encountered.
A Temple Tank That Looks Like a River
Rather than appearing like a conventional pond, this temple tank resembled a calm, gently flowing river.
Beyond the water stretched an expansive Kulagar filled with coconut palms, areca nut trees, and lush tropical vegetation, creating an incredibly picturesque landscape.
The view alone was enough to make anyone pause and admire nature.
Losing Ourselves in Nature
Stone steps led us down towards the water.
Towering trees on both sides were alive with playful monkeys leaping from branch to branch.
Completely forgetting our intention to leave, we followed the inviting pathway down to the water’s edge.
A stone railing with built-in seating overlooked the tranquil tank.
We quietly sat there watching ducks happily splashing through the water, elegant white egrets gliding across the evening sky, a solitary heron standing motionless upon a rock, and countless birds returning to their nests while filling the air with cheerful songs.
For quite some time, we simply sat there, captivated by nature’s beauty, occasionally capturing the unforgettable moments on our phones and completely losing track of time.
Leaving with a Promise to Return
We became so absorbed in the beauty around us that we hardly noticed nightfall.
As darkness slowly settled over the temple, a gentle sense of mystery reminded us that it was finally time to leave.
With hearts filled by the blessings of Goddess Vijayadurga and the unforgettable embrace of nature, we silently promised ourselves that next time we would stay for at least two days.
Yet even before such plans could be made, destiny brought us back once again.
Vijayadurga Temple’s Unique Makharotsav During Margashirsha Navaratri

However, Vijayadurga Temple follows a unique tradition.
Here, the grand Makharotsav is celebrated during Margashirsha Navaratri instead.
When we learned about this distinctive custom from an acquaintance, we decided to make a special night visit to witness it ourselves.
Experiencing the Divine Makhar Festival in Goa
Watching the Makharotsav at Vijayadurga Temple is an unforgettable spiritual experience.
Every temple in Goa has its own unique style of swinging the deity’s decorated Makhar, accompanied by traditional devotional music.
At Vijayadurga Temple, however, the Makhar is not merely swung forward and backward.
It also moves gracefully from side to side and even rotates in a complete circle, making the celebration truly distinctive.
Bathed in the soft glow of dim lights, the beautifully decorated Makhar carried the resplendent idol of Goddess Vijayadurga.
The devotional music, sacred atmosphere, and graceful movements of the Makhar immersed us completely in devotion for nearly forty-five minutes.
After receiving Prasad, we returned home with hearts full of joy and gratitude.
Keri – The Birthplace of Legendary Vocalist Kesarbai Kerkar
Music enthusiasts will be delighted to know that Keri village is the birthplace of the legendary Hindustani classical singer Kesarbai Kerkar.
The village proudly houses the Kesarbai Kerkar School, and nearby stands the ancestral home where the renowned vocalist once lived.

Vijayadurga Temple is located approximately 30 km from Panaji in Keri village of Ponda Taluka, Goa.
From Panaji
Travel along the Marcel–Savai Verem Road and take a right turn at Betki village, around 5 km ahead.
Via Mardol
Travel on the Mardol highway, turn left at Priol, and continue straight towards Keri.
From Belgaum
The temple is approximately 10–12 km from Ponda, making it easily accessible by road.
