The mere mention of Terekhol Fort used to ignite a desire to visit it. This year, the time finally came in December.

History of Terekhol Fort

Situated along the banks of the Terekhol River in the village of Terekhol, this fort was constructed by Raja Khem Sawant Bhosale of Sawantwadi in the 17th century. Subsequently, the Portuguese conquered this fort in a battle against the rulers of Sawantwadi. After Goa gained independence, this fort came under the jurisdiction of the Indian government.

Fort Terekhol Heritage

Now, this fort has been transformed into the “Fort Terekhol Heritage” hotel. Besides the hotel, there is a chapel and barracks. Climbing a few steps beside the church leads to a part of the fortification.

Memorial Dedicated to Freedom Fighters

Near the main entrance gate stands a memorial dedicated to the freedom fighters Sheshnath Wadkar, Hirve Guruji, and Alfred Alfanso.

Clean Environment Initiative

Although entry to Terekhol Fort is free, tourists who stay at the Terekhol Heritage Hotel get to experience the surroundings differently. The hotel provides a modern luxurious stay with a historical touch. Since we didn’t have much time, we couldn’t explore the entire vicinity. However, the part we did see was extremely clean and well-maintained, enhancing the joy of visiting Terekhol Fort.

Proximity to Panaji

Terekhol Fort is approximately 40 kilometers from Panaji. To reach the fort, there’s a ferry service available from Kerim. Combining a visit to the fort with a boat ride in the sea adds to the excitement. This could be a small adventure for those who are crazy about seeing the sea.

Situated near Maharashtra’s border, this fort is definitely worth visiting at least once.
