Salaulim Dam Goa – A Perfect Nature & Picnic Destination
After a hectic week of work, if you are looking for a peaceful Sunday picnic in Goa with your family, there is no shortage of beautiful places to explore. One such place that I recently visited and truly enjoyed is Salaulim Dam. It is an ideal destination to spend quality time with your loved ones while enjoying the beauty of nature, the soothing sound of water and the surrounding greenery.
Salaulim Dam – Goa’s Largest Man-Made Dam
Salaulim Dam is one of the most important dams in Goa. Known as Goa’s largest man-made dam, it has also become a popular tourist attraction in Goa.
Located in Sanguem Taluka in South Goa, the dam is approximately 5 km from Sanguem town. It is situated about 26 km from Margao and can also be reached via Chandor. From there, it takes around 20 minutes to reach Salaulim via the Curchorem–Sanvordem route.
The dam is built across the Salaulim River, a tributary of the Zuari River, which flows through the lush green hills of the Western Ghats. The surrounding area has been beautifully developed by the Goa Tourism Department, making Salaulim Dam a popular destination for family picnics, nature lovers and tourists.
Salaulim Dam remains open throughout the year from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Best Time to Visit Salaulim Dam: August to September.
Unique Duckbill Spillway – Salaulim Dam’s Main Attraction
Most dams tend to look similar, and the differences are generally noticed in their size, reservoirs, volume of water and surrounding natural scenery. Salaulim Dam has all these attractions, but what makes it particularly special is its unique and remarkable design.
Salaulim Dam features a distinctive Duckbill Spillway design without any gates. Water from the reservoir overflows through a semi-circular opening and plunges down from a height of nearly 140 feet.
The water falls with tremendous force, and when you stand on the bridge watching this spectacular sight, fine droplets of water reach you. The spray created by the falling water looks almost like steam rising into the air.
The scene is so beautiful that you simply want to stand there and keep watching. The cloudy sky, the thunderous sound of water rushing through the spillway and the misty spray spreading around the area create an almost magical atmosphere. For anyone with a vivid imagination, the scene may even bring to mind a witch’s bubbling cauldron in a magical world.
Salaulim Dam Entry Gates & Visitor Experience
There are two entrances to Salaulim Dam.
Visitors who simply want to see the dam can use the upper entrance gate. Vehicles can reach this entrance, which is located at the other end of the bridge across the dam. After parking your vehicle near the entrance, you can walk directly across the bridge and enjoy the magnificent view of the dam.
If you enter through the lower entrance, there are approximately 100 steps to climb to reach the dam. This entrance also provides an opportunity to explore the extensive garden surrounding the dam.
There is also a buggy service near the main lower entrance for visitors who wish to take senior citizens along.
The long and wide bridge across the dam offers a stunning panoramic view. On one side lies the vast reservoir, while on the other side, water cascades down below. Dense greenery under the Forest Department’s jurisdiction adds to the natural beauty of the surroundings. The entire landscape is worth taking the time to admire.
Botanical Garden, Adventure Activities & Picnic Spot
The lush greenery, medicinal plant garden below the dam and colourful butterflies fluttering around the flowers create a beautiful natural setting. The garden is spread across a large area and offers plenty of space for visitors to relax and enjoy nature.
For adventure lovers, there are several outdoor adventure activities made using natural tree trunks. These include a small hanging bridge, a hut-like resting area constructed from tree trunks and several other attractions.
There is also a small refreshment centre nearby. A beautiful canal lies just across the area, where visitors can often see numerous ducks swimming and moving around the water and its surroundings.
With its greenery, water views, botanical garden, adventure activities and peaceful atmosphere, Salaulim Dam is an excellent picnic spot in Goa for spending an enjoyable day with family and friends.
